Given that the subject of training is a matter very close to our heart, the event was celebrated with suitable pomp and ceremony. Representatives from schools, technical colleges and associate organisations of the local town of Radevormwald were accompanied by Jochen Hagt, the head of the region’s local authority, Ralf Udo Krapp, acting mayor of the municipality of Rade and Regine Bültmann-Jäger from the Cologne Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Our new training centre, with its 600 m² of floorspace and room for 26 trainees, is considerably more ample than our former training facility. Right from day one of their respective courses, metalworking trainees of Kuhn Special Steel and associate organisations have eighteen workbenches, five lathes and three milling machines at their disposal. As part of our efforts to offer optimum training conditions to the next generation of skilled employees, we have ensured that the new, improved facilities are designed to meet their need for a better learning environment.

This “investment in the future”, as Andre Kuhn has defined the new training centre, is virtually the only one of its kind in the entire Oberberg region of Germany. There is a tendency among the majority of metalworking firms to entrust their apprentices’ first year of training to large external organisations. Our preferred approach however is to involve new employees in the company’s day-to-day business from the very beginning. This ensures that they get to know our way of doing things right from day one, while allowing training to be tailored to meet the precise needs of our organisation.

We at Kuhn Special Steel concentrate on turning young people into metal machinists, machine and system operators, construction technicians with welding skills, foundry mechanics, electronic technicians and specialists in warehouse logistics and industrial management. We also offer training positions based on sandwich courses for metal machinists and specialists in industrial management.

Given that they account for more than 10% of our workforce, the proportion of trainees and apprentices is comparatively high. This reflects our guiding principle that young people are our future, and that we as a company have the obligation to provide them with the solid training needed to get their career off to a good start.

This attitude is shared by various associate organisations, who have for many years been sending their apprentices to us for their first year of training in metalworking skills.

The success of our approach and the long years of commitment of our head of technical training, Andreas Döbler, were confirmed by Jochen Hagt in his awarding to Mr Döbler of an honorary diploma on behalf of the local authority’s careers advice service.

We wish all our trainees a good start to their respective careers and a successful apprenticeship.
