CIMAC 2025: Focus on Drives for Alternative Fuels

The CIMAC Congress, the leading industry meeting for large engines, power, drives and propulsion took place in Zurich from May 19 to 23. M. Jürgensen was represented by a number of colleagues who were able to gain an impression of the latest developments and trends in the industry. Continue reading

Around 1,000 participants from all over the world came together for the multi-day event at the Zurich Convention Center – that’s a record. For the 31st time, the CIMAC Congress was the focal point of the international large engine and drive industry for several days and provided a platform for experts to exchange ideas. Numerous presentations, panel discussions, the accompanying exhibition and supporting events provided guests with information on the latest developments and topics in the industry.

M. Jürgensen was represented by colleagues Dirk Sauer and Sascha Burkhard at our own exhibition stand. The two were also able to find out about what is moving the industry. “The main topics were the developments and associated challenges regarding the use of alternative fuels such as methanol, ammonia and hydrogen,” recaps Sascha Burkhard, Head of Product Development and Application Technology.

It has become clear that there are various ways to burn new fuels, but that no concrete or uniform direction has yet emerged, despite operational concepts. Rather, it can be assumed that there will be market opportunities for various parallel concepts due to special boundary conditions in the individual applications. Currently, the focus of developments is primarily on combustion concepts and injection systems, but is increasingly shifting to other engine components, such as cylinder liners. “Overall, we have noticed an increased interest in our findings on the possible effects of the new fuels on our liner material,” adds Burkhard.

However, many participants considered the lack of infrastructure for the production and supply of these fuels to be a greater obstacle to the use of alternative fuels than the technological development of drive systems itself. Obviously, enormous efforts are still required here, including from the political side, to speed up the transformation.

The CIMAC Congress in Zurich showed once again that intensive work is being done on technical solutions for more climate-friendly drive concepts. M. Jürgensen is making an important contribution to this through its involvement in customer development and research projects. In addition, the event once again provided an excellent platform to get in touch with our customers and intensify the dialogue.
